where the pair also sold their own fruits and vegetables. The trend continued in the 80s with their sons, Glen and Steve Ikeda, who eventually took over the business. The boys expanded upon Sam and Sally’s original idea, and created a restaurant, complete with bakery and espresso bar. Later, Ikeda's also included a smoothie bar and many “signature” sauces, dressings and gourmet items.
“We make our own fresh salsas, salad dressings, marinades, jams and jellies, and a lot of gourmet items,” says Duane. Think peach salsa, teriyaki sauce, creamy wasabi sauce, jalapeno-stuffed olives, or mango ginger chutney. The baked goods are definitely worth trying. “We hand-make our pies at our Auburn store. We have people that actually make the crusts with their hands,” he says proudly. Choose from flavors like marionberry, raspberry, Dutch apple, French apple, or peach pies. The Davis location was created just seven years ago. “We wanted to take some of the pressure off our Auburn store,” Duane says. Eventually, he hopes that the Davis store will expand to be like the Auburn location.
The Davis store has a characteristic “mom and pop” feel. While owners Glen and Steve are mostly at their other location, manager Duane can be found stocking the store and greeting customers many days of the week. Most of the employees at Ikeda's are bright, young students like Reno Botelho, a recent high school graduate. She explains, “I started working here originally because it is close to my house
