As the August sun begins to set over the streets of downtown Davis, excitement fills the cooling air outside of Sophia’s Thai Bar & Kitchen. Golden, beaded lights illuminate the front patio overlooking E Street, where people of diverse ethnicities and ages are greeting each other and ordering beverages of varying shapes and colors - foamy amber liquids in tall glasses, clear drinks that glow beneath the black lights, and scarlet, lemon and viridescent drinks filled with a miscellany of fruits. Underneath the soft yellow light inside the bar, patrons begin to gather around tables and couches as rock music plays gently in the background. On the back patio, people enjoy food as delightful scents fill the air. By a quarter till eight, a multitude of people are arriving by car, by bike, and on foot and there is only standing room left in the bar area. Bartenders work quickly and meticulously to fill numerous drink orders, while the sounds of joyous conversation grow louder and louder - and it’s only a Tuesday night.

Trivia night at Sophia’s has become one of the most popular weekly events in Davis. Every Tuesday night at 9:30 p.m. groups of undergrads, grads, young professionals and others face off in a test of knowledge on a variety of subjects, including music, movies, astronomy, geography and sports.
