“It’s an embarrassment,” says Mike McDermott, when asked to describe the Halden Field stadium complex at Davis High School. “The facilities are dilapidated. If you go down Covell Boulevard, you can’t help but look and say, ‘What is that? If you kick that, will it fall over?’”
Mike is the president of the DHS Blue and White Foundation, which has undertaken as its first official project an effort to raise money toward renovation of the 47-year-old facility. The foundation was formed in 2002, according to its mission statement, “to encourage, strengthen and sustain the interaction between Davis Senor High School and its alumni and friends, and to encourage philanthropic support for Davis Senior High School.”
“It was formed with the idea that we have this one-high-school town and there’s all these alumni from Davis High who live here,” says Mike. “They want to give back to their high school. Considering how many alumni there are here in town, there should be some way that they can give back. The idea was to start a foundation to facilitate that.”
